Tupac Shakur – All Eyes On Me

All Eyes On Me is the 4th studio album and the most critically acclaimed release by American rapper Tupac Shakur. The album is the first double to be released in hip hop and spans two Billboard Hot 100 number 1’s “California Love” and “How Do You Want it

The album became Pac’s second album to chart at number 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart selling 566,000 copies in the first week, it won The Rap Album of the year in 1997 Soul Train Awards posthumously, on July 23, 2014 All Eyes On Me was certified diamond by the the Recording Industry of America RIAA

From New York to L.A.

It is largely known that Tupac Shakur was born in New York City and raised in Baltimore, Mary Land, he began his career as a California Bay Area rapper and was largely accepted as a West Coast rapper. Even the album cover famously captures the rapper holding up the “Westside” hand symbol.

What made him interesting in the past was his contradictory nature: He would play the thug one second and exude vulnerability the next. He wrote some of the most woman-positive songs in rap, “Keep Your Head Up” and “Dear Mama,” while throwing down rhymes about ho’s and bitches

Critical Reception

All Eyes On Me received widespread critical acclaim. Whatever 2Pac’s expectations were for All Eyez On Me, they were surely exceeded. The album stands in the elite class of hip-hop albums to both receive a diamond certification from the RIAA and top the Billboard 200 albums chart. With each statement contained therein, All Eyez On Me cements 2Pac’s rightful status among the greatest of all-time conversation and is seen by many as the definitive Tupac Shakur album.

All Eyes On Me captures the true essence of 2Pac, His vulnerability, his fears, his trials, and his tribulations. This album follows after he was charged with sexual assault, and it comes after he was shot. This state of shock and of paranoia the rapper was in, possibly induced the change necessary for Pac to produce such a powerful album. All Eyez On Me brought great impact along with the massive influence on Rap Music as a genre.

Track List

1. California Love

This is arguably Pac’s greatest hit, with funky beats produced by Dr. Dre. There was no denying that having spent the latter part of his formative years and launching his musical career in the Golden State gave 2Pac enough inspiration to pen an exceptional tribute to the lifestyle that became the center of pop-culture’s fascination.

Out on bail, fresh out of jail, California dreamin’
Soon as I step on the scene, I’m hearin’ hoochies screamin’
Fiendin’ for money and alcohol, the life of a Westside player
Where cowards die and the strong ball
Only in Cali where we riot, not rally, to live and die
In L.A. we wearin’ Chucks, not Ballys (yeah, that’s right)
Dressed in Locs and Khaki suits, and ride is what we do
Flossin’ but have caution, we collide with other crews
Famous because we program
Worldwide, let them recognize from Long Beach to Rosecrans
Bumpin’ and grindin’ like a slow jam
It’s Westside, so you know the Row won’t bow down to no man
Say what you say, but give me that bomb beat from Dre
Let me serenade the streets of L.A
From Oakland to Sac-town, the Bay Area and back down
Cali is where they put their mack down, give me love

2. Two of Amerikaz Most Wanted

2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted ft. Snoop Dogg is one of the songs with the best lyrics on the album. 2Pac and Snoop break down just why they are the best Rappers of all time. The song carries infectious beats and boastful lyricism:

2 Pac (Intro)

Up out of there
Ain’t nothin’ but a gangsta party
Eh, light that up, Snoop! Why you actin like that?
Ah shit, you done fucked up now
(Ain’t nothin’ but a gangsta party)
You done put two of America’s most wanted in the same motherfuckin’ place at the same motherfuckin’ time
(Ain’t nothin’ but a gangsta party)
Y’all niggas about to feel this
(Ain’t nothin’ but a gangsta party)
Break out the Champagne glasses and the motherfuckin’ condoms, have one on us, a’ight?
(Ain’t nothin’ but a gangsta party)

Snoop

Sho ’nuff, I keep my hand on my gun
‘Cause they got me on the run
Now I’m back in the courtroom, waitin’ on the outcome
“Free 2Pac” is all that’s on a nigga’s mind
But at the same time, it seems they tryin’ to take mine
So I’ma get smart and get defensive and shit
And put together a Million March for some gangsta shit
