Top 5 Greatest Artists of all time
It’s almost impossible to come up with a completely acceptable list of top 5 or even top 10 greatest artists of all time. The list below represents who I think are the top five musical acts of all time. I have taken into consideration the influence of the artists in terms of album sales and the impact they have hard on other artists. I have also been influenced to some extent with my own personal preferences. Feel free to give your opinion on the comment section below.
1. The Beatles
Show me a list of the greatest artists of all time and I will show you a list where The Beatles are at the top. The Beatles were a British Rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The members of the band were: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They started with skiffle beat and 1950s rock and roll they later experimented with several genres including; pop, indie, psychedelic and hard rock. Their most influential albums include: Rubber Soul (1965), Revolver (1966), Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), The Beatles; The White Album (1968), and Abbey Road (1969).
They are the best selling music acts according to RIAA with 800 million records. They have received 10 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award and were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
2. Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley was an American singer and actor. He is regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th Century and is often referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll”. Presley is the best selling solo artist in the history of recorded music with 600 million records sold. He was commercially successful in many genres, including pop, country, blues, and gospel. He won three competitive Grammy’s, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement at age 36, and has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame.
3. Michael Jackson
Michael Joseph Jackson dances to #3 on my list. He was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actor. He is widely regarded as the “King of Pop”. He broke through all racial barriers; his performances were exhilarating, his dance moves iconic and his music unequaled in its reach. He is easily the greatest performer ever.
Michael has sold over 350 million records, had over 100 RIAA Awards, 100 Billboard Awards, 26 American Music Awards, 4 Presidential Awards and 13 Grammys (8 won in one night). His album “Thriller” is the best selling album of all time with over 65 million units sold. He is the total package, singer, songwriter, dancer and performer.
4. Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd was an English rock band formed in London in 1965. They achieved international acclaim with their progressive and psychedelic music. Distinguished by their philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, extended compositions, and elaborate live shows, they are one of the most commercially successful and influential groups in popular music history.
The band was founded by students Syd Barrette on guitar and lead vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Roger Waters on bass and vocals, and Richard Wright on keyboards and vocals. Some of their successful albums are: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979) and The Final Cut (1983). The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall became two of the best selling albums of all time.
Pink Floyd were inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. By 2013, they had sold more than 250 million records worldwide.
5. Bob Marley
Robert Nesta Marley was a Jamaican singer and songwriter. Considered one of the pioneers of reggae, his musical career was marked by blending elements of reggae, ska, and rock steady, as well as forging a smooth and distinctive vocal and songwriting style. Marley’s contributions to music increased the visibility of Jamaican music worldwide, and made him a global figure in popular culture and one of the greatest artists.
Marley began his professional musical career in 1963, after forming Bob Marley & The Wailers. The group released at least 11 studio albums and attained international success and forged a reputation as touring artists. In 1974 The Wailers disbanded and Marley went ahead to release solo material. His debut studio album Natty Dread (1974) received positive reception, as did its follow-up Rastaman Vibration (1976). A few months after the album’s release, Marley survived an assassination attempt at his home in Jamaica, which prompted him to permanently relocate to London soon afterwards. There he recorded the album Exodus (1977); it incorporated elements of blues, soul, and British rock, enjoyed widespread commercial success, and is widely considered one of the best albums of all time.
The greatest hits album Legend was released in 1984, and subsequently became the best-selling reggae album of all-time. Marley also ranks as one of the best-selling music artists of all-time, with estimated sales of more than 75 million records worldwide, while his sound and style have influenced artists of various genres. He was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
