Mapogo Lions of Sabi Sands
The Mapogo lion coalition was a former notorious band of male lions that dominated and ruled the Sabi Sand region of Kruger National Park. They became infamous for their sheer power, dominating the area and ruling with an ‘iron paw’. The coalition consisted of Makulu, Kinky Tail, Mr. T, Scar, Rasta and Pretty Boy. It is believed that they were responsible for the deaths of more than 40 male lions and numerous cubs and females as they stamped their authority over the domain.
Whole prides of lions were wiped out in their ruthless quest for dominance and in some instances, challengers were eaten in an act of defiance: this is something that is almost unimaginable among the lions. Stories like these are seldom heard among these big cats. They have been labeled as sadistic and remorseless to name just a few. Eliminating all competition the Mapogos were able to rule over 8 prides.
Epitome of success
As terrifying as their reputation is, in the world of lions it is seen as the epitome of what a successful coalition should be. Their endeavors have ensured a safe breeding ground and stability in an area of unusually high competition. Their success has changed the dynamic of the lion population in the area forever and new litters are becoming more and more skewed in the favor of male offsprings. This is seen as natures way of balancing the scales and providing a more level playing field.
Coalition suffers the same fate
In recent years a younger and equally more formidable coalition, the Majingilanes in the north and the southern male pride, has been responsible for devastating and whittling down the Mapogos numbers.
It is easy to paint the Mapogos as sadistic and terrifying tyrants, because of the fury they rained down in the area. However, they will be remembered as great rulers and protectors.
