El Real Madrid son campeones de España
El Real Madrid beat the Yellow Submarine 2-1 to secure the La Liga title for a record 34th time. Karim Benzema scored a brace at the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano to ensure that ‘the club of the century’ is crowned champions for the first time since 2017. This was the tenth successive victory for Los Blancos ever since the restart of La Liga after the 3-month break caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Head coach Zinedine Zidane is a serial winner and has described the latest triumph as one of his best days in the professional game and has even declared it to be even sweeter than his infamous Champions League victories. Zidane has now won 11 titles over his two spells at El Real Madrid and dedicated the La Liga title to Madridistas who could only watch from home as a result of the restrictions brought about by the Covid-19.
“We won the league in the end because we won the most points it’s as simple as that,” he told La Liga’s coverage of the game.
“Today is one of the best days for me as a professional and after everything that happened, the three-month break, it’s fantastic what’s been achieved.”
“It’s strange for everyone, we can’t control the situation, we would have loved to be with the supporters, hopefully that can happen further down the line but for a question of health that can’t happen.”
“But I’m sure the supporters are happy celebrating at home. I say hello to all those supporters watching at home.”
After Benzema fired past Asenjo in the first half, the result seemed to be straightforward after Sergio Ramos was brought down in the Villareal box. Benzema converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-0.
“It has been a strange season but our objective was very clear once the league restarted,” said Ramos afterward.
“We wanted to win every game. This is the reward for all our hard work. 34 leagues, my fifth title.”
“Zidane has been key, he is the captain of the ship and led us from the start of the season – we have always felt protected with Zizou. He is a unique coach.”
34o titulo de La Liga
Zidane’s secret formula has landed them the 34th La Liga trophy and while Ramos and co. won’t be going to Cibeles to celebrate, the victory will feel all the sweeter given what they have battled through to come back after three months. They went on a 10 game winning streak and replaced their eternal rivals at the summit of LaLiga when it mattered most.
